China’s Currency Cheating Finally Gets Noticed

by Sean Brodrick on March 17, 2010

As I mentioned recently, tensions are heating up between China and the U.S.
On the subject of China, Jesse knocks it out of the park today …

They ought not to have been granted full trade status until China allowed their currency to float on some prearranged conditions at the very least. One can only speculate [...]

Are Tensions About to Boil Between China and the US?

by Sean Brodrick on March 15, 2010

The U.S. wants China to revalue its currency, the yuan or renminbi, upward.  China flatly says “no.” Bloomberg reports that China’s premier, Wen Jiabo, says:

“I don’t think the renminbi is undervalued.  We oppose countries pointing fingers at each other and even forcing a country to appreciate its currency.”

4 Energy Stories for Monday

by Sean Brodrick on October 19, 2009

Cool nights in Florida means we sleep with the windows open, and sleeping with the windows open means (thanks to loud insects, noisy sprinklers, and a plane that had better damned well have been on fire if it flew that low over my house) that I’m up at 3 am reading the news and blogs, which never [...]

Will China Ban Exports of Gold and Silver?

by Sean Brodrick on September 17, 2009

That’s the question being asked over at CommodityOnline.com by Erik Bethel, of the firm SinoLatin Capital.  He writes:

As recently as 2002, the private ownership of gold was prohibited in China. You could be jailed if caught with any in your possession. Beginning in 2009, in a stunning about-face, the central government removed all restrictions. In [...]

Eight Days Till Dollar Doomsday?

by Sean Brodrick on July 1, 2009

Uh-Oh! China Wants a G8 Debate on a new global currency.  That’s the take-away from this story: China requests reserve currency debate at G8.
In my opinion,  July 9th is NOT Dollar Doomsday, at least not in the way of a particular day being a day of total doom.  Nothing will happen at the G8 meeting [...]

Did you see the news today that Beijing has issued a requirement that its stimulus projects ‘Buy China’ .  You’ll remember that China protested vociferously when the U.S. talked about putting a “Buy American” requirement  in its stimulus package.  But the Chinese didn’t have to worry thanks to the echo chamber of babbling heads on [...]

Thursday News Roundup

by Sean Brodrick on March 26, 2009

The final numbers are in, and the fourth quarter saw GDP shrink at a 6.3 percent pace at the end of 2008, the worst showing in a quarter-century, and probably isn’t doing much better now.  Still, a 6.3 percent decline is better than the 6.5 percent that economists were expecting.
Meanwhile, new claims for unemployment benefits [...]

General Motors’ Chinese Bailout

by Larry Edelson on March 19, 2009

China’s government has decided to distribute 5 billion yuan ($731 million) in subsidies to encourage vehicle purchases in rural areas. This adds up to as much as $1,170 per vehicle.
China’s fiscal stimulus has aimed to concentrate on the impoverished rural areas that house half of its 1.3 billion population. This is good policy as vehicles [...]

Chinese Companies Set For Overseas Expansion

by Larry Edelson on March 16, 2009

http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601110&sid=a8.nKDumBnVI
The Chinese government has made it easier for its companies to take advantage of unprecedented low asset valuations by investing in commodities and corporations overseas. Chinese companies now only need to seek approval for overseas investments from local authorities, which is simpler and more streamlined to the previous approval process that went through the central [...]
