80% of China’s electricity is from coal-fired utility generators.
One of the least discussed ramifications of the earthquake is the importance of Sichuan province to the coal industry. Due to coal shortages, 32 utilities have already shut down.
The Chinese are very lucky this earthquake didn’t happen in the winter.
