Obama to meet with Dalai Lama

by Tony Sagami on September 19, 2009

Last week, Obama announced a stiff 35% tariff on Chinese tires. This week, Obama says he plans to meet with the Dalai Lama in November. It is almost like Obama is trying to do everything he can to piss off the Chinese.

Obama is playing with Chinese fire.

Hello Mr. Sagami,

I appreciate and enjoy your commentary very much. However, I must take exception to your “take” on the current U.S.-China situation. It seems to me that the U.S. has for the last 71 years treated China pretty well. Remember the “Flying Tigers?” And then on to the Korean conflict where China found it to their advantage to help decimate U.S. troops. Add to that the theft by China of an unknown number of technological secrets from “acquired” U.S. files that were put to good use by China in helping to build their manufacturing capability and especially their military (a seldom addressed and ongoing buildup) strength. If we are to be factually honest, we must agree that the U.S. has for many years, been a super-importer of Chinese goods, which in turn gave the Chinese the opportunity to create jobs for hundreds of thousands who left nearly impoverished outlying areas and migrated to cities for work, resulting in the loss of an untold number of U.S. manufacturing jobs due the skewed dollar/yuan exchange rate that was and is to this day, unfair. China purchased U.S. treasuries, not because they love us, but rather to have some sort of symbiotic relationship with their largest buyer of cheap and sometimes harmful goods.

Fast forward to the present: As to the Dalai Lama; you say the Chinese are concerned about negative statements by him. The truth is, the Chinese would like to see him out of the picture permanently! What gives China the right to enter, pillage, desecrate and otherwise ruin a culture not of their liking? Certainly, they don’t need the land. Their actions mimic and are no different than the “school bully” most of us have known. Unfortunately, there is no “principal” to send China to for remediation. And, the United Nations in its adinfinitum, adnauseum inability to deal with really meaningful problems continues to look the other way and hope all the naughtiness will be ameliorated by silence. President Obama does in fact owe U.S. labor a few favors and, his position on imposing a levy on imported tires from China is “right on.” It’s time for the U.S. to turn off the cheap money flow to China. Their super-duper cash position is the result of the west to east money flow during the last 50 years. In closing: I have no personal ill will regarding China. God bless everyone, including the Dalai Lama!
