Background:  In 1991, an oil tanker off the coast of Australia split in two, dumping 20,000 tons of crude oil into the sea. At the time, an Australian member of parliament appeared on a TV news program to reassure the Australian public with soothing rhetoric.   Australian television comedy duo John Clarke and Brian Dawe used that incident (a politician’s response to a disaster) as the nugget for their brilliant satire. Clarke and Dawe are still around and making people laugh.

They remind me of Britain’s John Bird and John Fortune, who do their own hilarious parodies of Very Important People …

I turned my sound on my computer all the way up and I can’t hear that video. However, I have a confession to make: I’m so old, I remember seeing that SCTV skit way back when. It is hilarious.
