BP has capped the leak from its Deepwater Horizon well in the Gulf of Mexico, but the crisis isn’t over. A local news team tested water on the shores of Alabama. The amount of oil contamination from the Deepwater Horizon spill gets worse and worse. The final test actually made the test tube explode.
The chemist, Bob Naman, thinks the reaction was caused by the presence of methane gas or Corexit, the dispersant that BP has been using in the Gulf of Mexico.
As much as 1 million times the normal level of methane gas has been found in some regions near the Gulf of Mexico oil spill, enough to potentially deplete oxygen and create a dead zone, U.S. scientists said on Tuesday.
Texas A&M University oceanography professor John Kessler, just back from a 10-day research expedition near the BP Plc oil spill in the gulf, says methane gas levels in some areas are “astonishingly high.”
Now let’s make it even more interesting. This news about methane would go right along with a theory put forward by oil expert Matt Simmons, who says BP is covering up a major leak separate from the original leak. Here’s Matt talking to Dylan Ratigan about it …
Elsewhere, Simmons warned that there could be a gigantic “lake” of crude oil that is pooling under great pressure 4000 to 5000 feet down in the “basement” of the Gulf’s waters. Simmons is concerned that a tropical storm will bring this oil up - as tropical storms and hurricanes usually stir up deeper cold water - and with it clouds of methane gas that will move toward the Gulf shore and kill a lot of people.
Is Simmons talking through his hat? Even theoildrum.com calls his statements “nuts.” However, the U.S. government has detected another seep from the seabed some distance from the original well. If the leak proves to be there, then the government can force BP to open the now-closed cap and start pumping oil up to tankers again.
Finally, Simmons is not the extreme. There is a growing group of thought that says BP could be triggering a “planet killer” event. Before you panic, realize that this school of thought isn’t recognized by mainstream scientists.
Bottom line: Don’t give in to fears, but the crisis isn’t over yet.

Unfortunately and sadly there are so many Darwin awards that could be given out in all of this. First, all those stupid people at the beach - what are they thinking? Then all of us stupid people for actually believing the lies and obvious sleight of hand from BP and the government - and trusting they have our best interests in mind. And of course, BP for actually thinking they can tap and control 20000-70000 psi abiotic oil channels at that depth.
As a group of investigators, there are many fact you need not give the public in Toto. yet I feel even you are not getting all the facts!, I believe your govt has a great part in all of this problem due mainly to not doing their job of inspection adequately,
BP was there in name only ; the whole shebang was and is American,from the rig to the manpower to the materials involved the whole setup was an oil industry mess;. Sanctioned by Washington.
With regard to the extent of the damage, who knows?
