I attribute at least part of America’s slide down the slippery slope of doom to the general decline in our news media. We used to have a news media that ferreted out the truth. I know that didn’t last for long, but it helped balance the needs of the people against the wants of the oligarchs. Now, the media has become the sensationalist lapdogs of the oligarchs. And no, citizen journalism won’t save us. Most Americans (71%) still get what they think is news from the major networks.
Here’s a great example of how this fails …
Also, I always read with interest Project Censored’s Top 25 Stories for the year. Here’s a link to their Top 25 Censored Stories for 2010.
And here are the top 7 …
§ 1. US Congress Sells Out to Wall Street
§ 2. US Schools are More Segregated Today than in the 1950s
§ 3. Toxic Waste Behind Somali Pirates
§ 4. Nuclear Waste Pools in North Carolina
§ 5. Europe Blocks US Toxic Products
§ 7. Obama’s Military Appointments Have Corrupt Past
XX Sean’s note – It seems to me that #1 and #6 are very similar, but maybe it just needed saying twice. I found #20 very interesting …
20. Secret Control of the Presidential Debates
And one I would add to the list …
Last Decade Was The Biggest Loser for Stocks in U.S. History Gee, I wonder why we’re not seeing more about that on CNBC, eh? Maybe I’m just missing their coverage.
One more story of interest — When I saw that the USDA was pushing farmers to spread coal waste on their fields – and along with it, high levels of mercury, arsenic, lead and other heavy metals , I thought: “You’ve got to be kidding me.” And if you’re wondering why the networks would rather concentrate on a runway mishap in Jamaica than report news on something that affects the food we all eat, well, that’s because the mainstream media gets an utter “FAIL” at what it’s should be doing.
“The only security of all is in a free press. The force of public opinion cannot be resisted when permitted freely to be expressed. The agitation it produces must be submitted to. It is necessary, to keep the waters pure.” – Thomas Jefferson.
